Hallstatt Ossuary
The Ossuary (Beinhaus) in Hallstatt is one of the most unusual sites in Austria containing over 1200 skulls of which 610 are painted and decorated with flowers leaves and the names of the deceased. Located in the 12th century St Michaels Chapel next to the Catholic Church. This tradition arose due to limited cemetery space in Hallstatt squeezed between mountain and lake. After 10-15 years bones were exhumed bleached in the sun and painted by relatives of the deceased. The last skull was added in 1995
