Hallstatt Glacier Garden
The Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten) in Hallstatt is a unique natural monument bearing witness to the last Ice Age. Discovered in 1926 it was formed 12000 years ago when the glacier receded leaving behind stunning rock formations. The main attraction is the Giant Cauldron (Riesenkessel) with a 5-meter diameter where meltwater carrying rock particles carved the stone in a spiral pattern. This fascinating formation can be viewed from the Durrenbach bridge at 700 meters elevation. The area is part of the hiking trail in Echern Valley and reachable in about 20 minutes from the valley entrance. Note: Partially closed since 2024 due to cable car construction
