Gravensteen Castle
Gravensteen, or 'Castle of the Counts', is an exceptionally preserved medieval castle in the heart of Ghent. Built by Count Philip of Alsace in 1180 in the style of Crusader castles, it served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders. Its massive walls, fortified towers, and moat transport you to the age of knights. Inside houses a museum of weapons and medieval torture instruments. From the battlements, enjoy panoramic views over the old town. The entertaining self-guided tours with humorous audio guide make visits fun for families. After serving as a mint and prison, it was nearly demolished before being saved in the 19th century.
