Gdańsk Crane (Żuraw)
The Gdansk Crane is the largest surviving medieval port crane in Europe and one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Built in 1442-1444, it was used to load and unload cargo and install ship masts, capable of lifting loads up to 4 tonnes to a height of 11 meters using massive wooden wheels operated by workers walking inside them. The unique building combines the functions of a city gate and port crane. Today it is part of the National Maritime Museum with exhibitions about Gdansk's maritime and trade history. The view from the opposite bank of the Motlawa River is one of the most photographed scenes in the city
