faq.subtitle Fort St Elmo

In 1565, the Knights of St John and Maltese defenders held Fort St Elmo for 31 days against overwhelming Ottoman forces. Though the fort eventually fell with nearly all defenders killed, the delay proved crucial in allowing time for relief forces to arrive and ultimately defeat the Ottoman siege.

King George VI awarded the George Cross to Malta in 1942 for the heroism and devotion of its people during the intense Axis bombing in World War II. Malta was the most bombed place on Earth at that time. The original cross is displayed at Fort St Elmo.
