Fes el-Bali (Old Medina)
Fes el-Bali is the oldest and largest medina in the Arab world and the largest car-free urban area. Founded in the 9th century, it contains over 9,000 narrow alleys that are difficult to navigate without a guide. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1981. It contains over 200 mosques, thousands of artisan workshops, and traditional markets. Life here has changed little since medieval times, with mules still transporting goods and craftsmen working with traditional methods.
