El Cedral is the oldest settlement on Cozumel with remains of a small Maya temple and modern village surrounding it. Though the Maya structure is very small (mostly covered in Spanish stucco), the site has historical significance as the first place where Spanish forces held Mass in Mexico in 1518. The village is known for its annual festival in May.
