Eiffel Tower
Walking toward the Eiffel Tower for the first time, it appears unexpectedly and turns out larger than imagined. 330 meters of iron, a lace-like structure meant to stand 20 years that has now stood for 135. Symbol of Paris, hated at birth and loved now by the whole world.
A Temporary Structure
The tower was built for the centennial of the French Revolution as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair. Gustave Eiffel won the competition. Before construction finished, three hundred cultural figures signed a protest against the iron monster. Maupassant and Verlaine called the tower a disgrace to Paris. They lost.
In 1909, the tower was set for demolition. Radio saved it: Eiffel installed antennas at the summit, making it a strategic asset.
Engineering Marvel
7,300 tons of iron, 2.5 million rivets. Built in two years. Four inclined pillars converge toward the summit, distributing the load. The tower sways up to 12 cm in wind but doesn't fall.
Three Levels
First floor (57 m) - glass floor, restaurant, exhibition. Second floor (115 m) - best balance of height and view, Jules Verne restaurant. Summit (276 m) - views of all Paris, champagne bar.
How to Visit
Online tickets essential. Elevator to summit about 29 euros. Open until midnight in summer. Lights sparkle every hour after sunset.
