Duke's Diwan
Duke's Diwan is an arts and cultural center and historic house museum located in the heart of downtown Amman. Built in 1924 by Abdul Rahman Madi, the building is one of the city's oldest preserved stone structures. It originally served as Amman's first post office until the 1940s, then briefly as the Finance Ministry, and was converted into the Haifa Hotel for 50 years (1948-1998) following the Nakba. In 2001, Mamdouh Bisharat, known as the 'Duke of Mukheibeh,' rented the building at double its price to save it from demolition. He transformed it into a Diwan - an Arabic term for a welcoming room always open to guests. Today, it's a hub for artists, thinkers, and poets to gather and exchange ideas. The rooms are adorned with an eclectic collection of antiquities, vintage photographs, and period furniture.
