Double Spiral Staircase
The Double Spiral Staircase (Doppelwendeltreppe) is a late Gothic architectural masterpiece located inside Graz Castle (Grazer Burg), the seat of the Styrian regional parliament. Built by stonemasons in 1499-1500 during the reign of German King and later Emperor Maximilian I, this unique staircase consists of two intertwining spiral paths that meet and separate at each floor - symbolizing reconciliation and parting. The 50 steps lead to the top, and while the view from there is modest, the engineering and craftsmanship of this 500-year-old structure is remarkable. Also known as the 'Stairs of Reconciliation'.
