Cotopaxi Volcano
Cotopaxi rises to 5,897 meters as the world's highest active volcano and Ecuador's second-highest peak. Its perfect snow-capped cone forms an iconic scene in Cotopaxi National Park. Visitors can drive to the parking lot at 4,500m then hike to the José Ribas Refuge at 4,864m. Summit climbing requires a certified guide and typically starts at midnight to reach the peak at sunrise. The volcano rewards climbers with breathtaking views across the South American surroundings from the summit.
