Museum of Cosmonautics
The Museum of Cosmonautics is one of the world's largest science and technology museums dedicated to space exploration history. Located in the base of the "Conquerors of Space" monument at VDNKh, it houses a unique collection of space technology and artifacts.
Museum History
The museum opened in 1981 for the 20th anniversary of the first human spaceflight. It originally occupied a small area in the monument's base. After major reconstruction in 2009, exhibition space quadrupled, reaching 8,500 square meters.
"Conquerors of Space" Monument
The 107-meter obelisk depicting a rocket's trail was erected in 1964. Its titanium cladding symbolizes striving toward the future. The museum is at its base, and nearby is the Cosmonauts Alley with busts of space pioneers.
Exhibition
The collection numbers over 99,000 exhibits. Central place goes to authentic spacecraft: Soyuz descent module, full-scale Mir orbital station, lunar module. Many exhibits can be viewed from inside.
First Flight Section
A separate hall is devoted to Yuri Gagarin and the Vostok-1 flight. Here are his personal belongings, original documents, first cosmonauts' spacesuits. Sergei Korolev's office interior is recreated with authentic furniture and objects.
Interactive Elements
The museum offers ISS docking simulators, G-force centrifuge, virtual Moon walks. The cinema shows space films. Educational programs and quests are available for children.
Korolev's Memorial Office
A unique exhibition—the chief designer's authentic office, relocated from his home. Decisions that shaped cosmonautics history were made here. Korolev's books, drawings, and personal items create a sense of presence.
Practical Information
The museum is at VDNKh's northern entrance, VDNKh metro. Open daily except Monday. Allow 2-3 hours for a full visit. The "Luna" café serves "space food" in tubes.
Atmosphere
The Museum of Cosmonautics is essential for anyone interested in space exploration history. The exhibit scale is impressive—real rockets and full-size stations. Ideal for visiting with children. After the museum, stroll through VDNKh.
