Copernicus Monument

The Copernicus Monument is a bronze statue honoring Nicolaus Copernicus, the renowned Polish astronomer who formulated the heliocentric model of the universe. Created by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and unveiled in 1830, the statue depicts Copernicus holding a compass and armillary sphere. Located in front of the neoclassical Staszic Palace (Polish Academy of Sciences), it is one of Warsaws most iconic landmarks and popular meeting points.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish astronomer and mathematician who developed the heliocentric model proving that Earth revolves around the Sun, revolutionizing our understanding of the universe. He is considered one of history's most influential scientists.

During Nazi occupation, Germans removed the monument and sent it to be melted down. Polish resistance fighters rescued it and hid the statue in pieces. It was restored and returned to its place in 1945 after liberation.
