Convent of San Bernardino of Siena
The Convent of San Bernardino of Siena is one of the oldest Franciscan monasteries in the Americas, built in 1552. This massive fortified complex blends Spanish colonial architecture with local Maya elements. The church features a gilded Baroque altarpiece and ancient frescoes. The convent includes a peaceful courtyard and a well built over a sacred Maya cenote. The evening illumination of the monastery is one of the most beautiful sights in the city.
