Commander Islands
The Commander Islands are a remote archipelago in the Bering Sea, home to Russias largest marine reserve. Named after explorer Vitus Bering who died there in 1741, the islands host massive colonies of fur seals, sea lions, whales (including orcas and humpbacks), and thousands of seabirds including puffins. The indigenous Aleut people live in Nikolskoye village, the only settlement with about 700 residents. Access is by plane (3.5 hours) or expedition cruise from Kamchatka. The islands offer pristine wilderness, unique wildlife encounters, and a glimpse into Aleut culture.
