Church of Saint Lazarus
The Church of Saint Lazarus is one of the finest Byzantine churches in Cyprus, built in the 9th century over the tomb of Lazarus of Bethany, whom Jesus raised from the dead. According to tradition, after his resurrection Lazarus fled to Cyprus where he became the first Bishop of Kition (ancient Larnaca) for 30 years. The church's crypt contains his empty tomb (relics were transferred to Constantinople in 898). The church features a magnificent 18th-century gilded wood iconostasis and a beautiful Byzantine museum in the adjacent building.
