Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is Dublins oldest building still in daily use, founded by the Viking King Sitric Silkenbeard around 1028. The current medieval stone structure dates from the 12th-13th centuries and serves as the cathedral of the Dublin and Glendalough diocese. Its highlight is the 12th-century crypt - the largest medieval crypt in Britain and Ireland - which contains the famous mummified cat and rat, treasury, and fascinating exhibits.

In the 1860s, a mummified cat chasing a mummified rat was discovered inside an organ pipe - they got stuck and naturally preserved. This quirky artifact is displayed in the crypt and has become one of the cathedrals most popular exhibits.

If time permits, visit both as they are just 5 minutes apart walking. Christ Church is older with a unique medieval crypt. St Patricks is larger with Jonathan Swift connections. Christ Church is more atmospheric, St Patricks more grand.
