Chouara Tannery is the oldest and largest tannery in Fes, operating since the 11th century. Hundreds of earthen pits filled with natural dyes create an unforgettable kaleidoscope of colors. Artisans still use traditional techniques to soften, tan, and dye leather just as their ancestors did centuries ago. The view from terraces of surrounding shops provides stunning photographs, especially in the morning when sunlight illuminates the colorful pits. The smell is strong due to pigeon droppings used in the tanning process.
