Chott el Jerid is the Sahara's largest salt lake, spanning over 7,000 square kilometers. Famous for unique mirage phenomena and rainbow-colored salt deposits that shimmer in the desert heat. Featured as a Star Wars filming location for scenes on planet Tatooine. The highway crosses the lake for 50 kilometers.
Entry is free. Camel rides and quad tours available from around 30 EUR
October to May for comfortable temperatures. Sunrise and sunset offer the most spectacular colors. Avoid summer months when temperatures exceed 50°C.
