Chetham's Library is the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world, founded in 1653. It holds over 100,000 volumes of printed books, of which 60,000 were published before 1851. Founded by Humphrey Chetham who believed that education and knowledge should be free for all. The historic rooms can only be visited through guided tours.

Tours are usually held at 11:00 and 14:30 on various days Monday-Friday. Book in advance as tours are led by expert volunteers and spaces are limited.
