Castlefield is the industrial and Roman heart of Manchester, and was the UK's first Urban Heritage Park since 1982. It houses the Roman fort Mamucium (AD 79), historic canals including the world's first industrial canal (Bridgewater Canal), and renovated warehouses converted into bars and restaurants. Reconstructed sections of the Roman fort walls and gateway can be seen.

Visit in summer for outdoor events at Castlefield Bowl (8,000 capacity). The area is best explored on foot, combining the Roman fort, canal walks, and the nearby Science and Industry Museum.
