Carmo Convent
Carmo Convent is one of Lisbon's most evocative landmarks - the ruins of a Gothic church destroyed in the devastating 1755 earthquake. The majestic arches stand open to the sky as a memorial to the disaster. The archaeological museum inside houses artifacts ranging from Roman sarcophagi to Peruvian mummies and medieval pieces. The site is particularly striking at sunset when light filters through the arches.
