Cardboard Cathedral
The Transitional Cathedral, popularly known as the Cardboard Cathedral, is a unique architectural masterpiece designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Opened in 2013 as a temporary replacement for Christchurch Cathedral damaged in the 2011 earthquake, it features 98 large cardboard tubes forming the walls and roof, with triangular stained glass windows. It has become a symbol of resilience and creativity, attracting 300,000 visitors annually. The cathedral remains a functioning Anglican church hosting regular services and community events.
