Capuchos Convent
Capuchos Convent, also known as the Cork Convent, is a unique architectural masterpiece embodying the absolute poverty embraced by Franciscan monks. Founded in 1560, it features tiny cells lined with cork for protection against cold and humidity. The convent was built with extreme modesty, with narrow passages and low doors forcing visitors to bow. Located deep in the remote Sintra forest, it offers an atmosphere of tranquility and spiritual isolation. Despite its exceptional beauty, it remains one of Sintra's least crowded attractions, providing an authentic glimpse into austere monastic life far from the tourist crowds.
