Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet
The Captain Cook Memorial is one of Canberra's most recognizable landmarks, consisting of a powerful water jet that can reach heights of 152 meters (approximately 6 tons of water in the air at any moment). Built to commemorate the bicentenary of Captain James Cook's first sighting of Australia's east coast, it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 April 1970. The jet is visible from many locations around Canberra and has become a symbol of the city. The memorial is completed by a bronze globe sculpture at Regatta Point showing Cook's voyages. The jet operates daily from 11am to 2pm, weather permitting.
