Byodo-in is an 11th-century Buddhist temple in Uji, south of Kyoto, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do) appears on the Japanese 10-yen coin and is considered the finest example of Heian period architecture. The building resembles a phoenix floating above a pond, with a gilded Amida Buddha statue inside. Uji is also famous for its excellent green tea. The museum houses original temple treasures.

Yes for those interested in Buddhist history, but the tour is Japanese-only (10-15 min) and photography is not allowed. Many enjoy viewing from outside and visiting the museum instead. The museum displays the original phoenix figures from the roof and bodhisattva statues.
