Bridge on the River Kwai
The Bridge on the River Kwai is a World War II historic monument built by prisoners of war on the "Death Railway" between Thailand and Burma. Today it's a memorial to over 100,000 who died during the railway's construction.
Near the bridge are Allied war cemeteries and a railway museum telling the tragic construction story. You can ride a historic train along the preserved section of the railway past scenic cliffs.
Every year in late November, the "River Kwai Bridge Week" festival features a sound and light show. The town of Kanchanaburi is 2 hours from Bangkok and offers many riverside hotels.
