Bock Casemates

The Bock Casemates are a vast underground defense network carved into the rocky promontory of the Bock, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Originally built by the Spanish in 1644 and expanded by Austrians, the tunnels once stretched 23 km and could shelter 35,000 soldiers. Today 17 km remain, with the most impressive sections open to visitors including windows carved into the rock offering stunning views.
