Bled Island
Bled Island is Slovenia's only natural island, a jewel floating in the emerald waters of Lake Bled surrounded by the Julian Alps. Accessible only by traditional pletna boats rowed by boatmen in folk costume, or by swimming. The island is crowned by the 15th-century Assumption of Mary Church with its legendary wishing bell dating from 1534. Legend says that whoever rings the bell three times will have their wish granted. 99 stone steps lead from the boat dock to the church, and grooms traditionally carry their brides up as a good luck ritual. The island offers stunning views of Bled Castle perched on the cliffs above.
