Belfry of Bruges
The Belfry of Bruges is the city's UNESCO-listed landmark, rising 83 meters above Markt Square. Built in the 13th century, it houses 47 bells that play enchanting melodies. Climbing requires ascending 366 steps through narrow spiral passages, but the reward is worth the effort: breathtaking panoramic views over the city's tiled rooftops and canals. In medieval times, the tower served as a watchtower and treasury. Today you can see the historic clock mechanism and listen to the carillonneur play traditional tunes. The octagonal upper section was added in the 15th century after fire destroyed the original wooden spire.
