Basilica of St. Euphemia
The Basilica of St. Euphemia crowns the highest point of the Rovinj Old Town peninsula and is the city's most prominent landmark. The current Baroque church was constructed between 1725 and 1736 over the remains of older medieval churches. Inside lies the sixth-century marble sarcophagus of St. Euphemia, the main pilgrimage focus. The 61-meter bell tower is the tallest in Istria, topped by a four-meter copper statue of the saint that rotates as a weather vane. The climb requires ascending 192 steep wooden steps, but the panoramic view from the top encompasses the Old Town rooftops, the Adriatic Sea, and the islands of the Rovinj archipelago.
