Basilica of the Holy Blood
The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a unique Romanesque-Gothic church housing one of the most sacred Christian relics: a vial said to contain the blood of Christ. Thierry of Alsace brought it from the Holy Land in 1150 during the Second Crusade. The basilica consists of two chapels: the lower Romanesque chapel, dark and majestic, and the upper Gothic chapel, richly decorated. Daily, the relic is displayed for veneration. The Procession of the Holy Blood on Ascension Day is a major religious and cultural event listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The upper chapel features stunning neo-Gothic murals and stained glass.
