Basilica Cistern
Basilica Cistern is an underground water palace in the heart of Istanbul. 336 columns support the vaults of this ancient reservoir built under Emperor Justinian. In the dimness, with the sound of dripping water — a sense of another world.
History
The cistern was built in 532 under Justinian I. Dimensions: 140 by 70 meters, capacity 80,000 cubic meters. It supplied water to the Great Palace of Byzantine emperors. The name "Basilica" comes from a temple that stood here earlier.
