Banteay Srei
Banteay Srei, meaning 「Citadel of Women」, is a 10th-century architectural jewel considered the most beautiful temple in the Angkor complex. This Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva was built in 967 CE from pink sandstone and is renowned for its exceptionally intricate carvings that represent the finest detail work in Khmer art. Despite its small size compared to other temples, the quality of ornamentation is unmatched - the devatas (female deities) are carved with such delicate precision they appear like jewelry. The pink and red sandstone gives a warm glow especially at sunrise and sunset. French novelist Andre Malraux famously attempted to steal several sculptures in 1923, later inspiring his novel. The temple requires a 25 km journey from Siem Reap, but the trip is worthwhile to witness this masterpiece of miniature architecture.
