Balbi Arch
The Balbi Arch is the historic gateway to Rovinj Old Town, standing on the main square Trg Marsala Tita. This Baroque arch was built in 1679 during the tenure of Venetian podesta Daniel Balbi, replacing the older city gate known as Porton della Pescheria (Fish Market Gate). The arch features symbolic carvings on each side: a Turk's head and a Venetian's head, representing the cultural and political dynamics of the era. Above sits the winged Lion of St. Mark, symbol of the Venetian Republic, holding an open book that signifies Rovinj's voluntary acceptance of Venetian rule. The arch remains in active daily use as the main entrance to the Old Town and the starting point of the famous Grisia Street.
