Assumption Cathedral
The Assumption Cathedral is the main temple of Kolomna and one of the most historically significant churches in Russian Orthodox history. It was originally founded in 1379 by Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the famous Battle of Kulikovo, an event that fundamentally changed the course of Russian history. The cathedral was rebuilt in the 17th century in a magnificent architectural style featuring five golden domes that gleam brilliantly in the sunlight. The interior houses a unique collection of historical icons and wall paintings spanning several centuries, making the cathedral a living museum of Russian religious art. The building impresses visitors with its majestic proportions and richly decorated interior, including a stunning multi-tiered iconostasis that reaches toward the vaulted ceiling. The temple remains active to this day, with regular prayer services and religious ceremonies held throughout the week. Entrance is free and donations are welcomed.
