The ruins of this Roman amphitheatre lie below street level at Piazza Stesicoro, in stark contrast to the modern city above. It was one of the largest in the Roman world, capable of holding 15,000 spectators. Today about one-tenth of the original building is visible.

After the devastating 1693 earthquake and multiple Mount Etna eruptions, the amphitheatre was buried under debris and lava. The modern city was built over it, and the ruins weren't discovered until the 19th century.
