Almendres Cromlech
The Almendres Cromlech is the largest megalithic monument on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the oldest in the world, predating Stonehenge by 2,000 years. The site features 95 oval stones arranged in concentric circles, used for sacred rituals and astronomical observation since the 6th millennium BCE. Located amid cork oak forests 15 km west of Évora, it offers a unique spiritual atmosphere especially at sunrise or sunset. The site is free to visit 24/7 and accessible only by car via a dirt road. Often called the Portuguese Stonehenge, it remains remarkably well-preserved and uncrowded.
