Ahu Tongariki
Ahu Tongariki is Easter Island's largest ceremonial platform, where fifteen giant moai statues stand facing inland as ancestors once watched over villages. The tallest statue measures 9 meters and weighs 86 tons - the heaviest moai ever successfully transported and erected. A 1960 tsunami caused by the Chilean earthquake destroyed the site, but it was magnificently restored in the 1990s with Japanese assistance. Sunrise here between December and March is spectacular as light rises behind the silhouettes.
