Yekaterinburg sits on Ural Mountains which traditionally divide Europe and Asia. Obelisk 17km from city center marks exact border - you can stand with one foot in each continent!
Tsar Nicholas II and his family were executed here in 1918. Church on Blood now stands on the spot. Ganina Yama monastery marks where bodies were hidden.
Flight: 2.5h (from $50). Train: 24-26h (from $40). Night train is comfortable option with sleeper cars.
June-August for warm weather and nature trips. Winter is very cold (-20C) but magical with snow. Avoid April (muddy season).
