Useful tips for visiting Ulaanbaatar
Visit Gandan Monastery early morning for prayers - monks chanting, incense, peaceful atmosphere. Most important Buddhist site in Mongolia. Giant golden Buddha inside.
Book Gobi or countryside tour from UB - can't properly experience Mongolia without leaving capital. Even 2-day trip transforms understanding. Many tour agencies along Peace Avenue.
Climb Zaisan for sunset - 600 steps but best panoramic views. Soviet memorial, giant Buddha nearby. On clear day, see mountains surrounding city.
Try buuz (dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pies), airag (fermented mare's milk). Meat-heavy cuisine. Modern cafe scene growing in UB. Very affordable eating.
