faq.subtitle Tirana

Very safe! Old stereotypes are outdated. Albanians are incredibly welcoming to tourists. Violent crime very rare. Normal precautions for petty theft. One of Europe's friendliest countries.

Most nationalities visa-free for 90-365 days (varies). EU, US, UK, Canada, Australia visa-free. Check albanian.embassy for your country. Very open visa policy.

Communist leader Enver Hoxha built 750,000 bunkers fearing invasion. They're everywhere! BunkArt 1 and 2 museums in Tirana show this bizarre history. Fascinating Cold War experience.

Furgons (minibuses) from Tirana to Himara, Saranda, Ksamil take 4-6 hours. Beautiful but winding coastal road. Better rent car for flexibility. Beaches are stunning and much cheaper than Croatia/Greece.

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Tirana

Visit BunkArt 1 or 2 - museums in converted Communist bunkers showing Albania's bizarre Cold War history. Unique experience you won't find elsewhere. BunkArt 2 is in center.

Explore Blloku area in evening - former Communist forbidden zone, now best nightlife. Amazing transformation. Cafes are open very late, Albanians love socializing.

Bring cash - many places don't accept cards. ATMs widespread but withdraw enough. ~100 ALL = €1 for easy calculation.

Try byrek (savory pie), tavë kosi (lamb with yogurt), and raki (local spirit). Albanian coffee culture is strong - espresso very cheap and excellent.
