Useful tips for visiting Svaneti
Book Vanilla Sky flights early - they operate 4 daily flights Tbilisi-Mestia but fill up fast, especially in summer. Flight time just 40 minutes vs 8-10 hours by road.
Try Kubdari - the signature Svan meat pie filled with spiced beef and pork. Best enjoyed fresh from local guesthouses.
Bring enough cash - ATMs only in Mestia. Most guesthouses and restaurants are cash-only. Nearest bank is in Zugdidi.
Wear proper hiking boots - even village paths are uneven. Pack layers as mountain weather changes quickly.
Visit Margiani House Museum in Mestia to learn about Svan culture and tower life. Includes 4 authentic family towers from different centuries.
