Bus from Skopje takes 3 hours (~500 MKD/€8). Frequent departures. Ohrid is UNESCO site - stunning lake, medieval churches, beautiful old town. Must-visit if in North Macedonia. Worth 2+ days.
Was 'Macedonia' until 2019, renamed to 'North Macedonia' to resolve dispute with Greece (Greek region also called Macedonia). Now NATO and EU candidate. Name change ended decades of conflict.

Walk across Stone Bridge from new center to Old Bazaar - you'll experience two completely different worlds. New: surreal statues. Old: authentic Ottoman atmosphere.
Visit Matka Canyon for boat ride through stunning gorge - 30 min from Skopje. Caves, hiking, restaurants. Best day trip from capital. €5-10 including boat.
Try tavče gravče (baked beans), ajvar (pepper spread), and kebapi at Old Bazaar restaurants. Extremely cheap and delicious. Full meal under €5.
Climb to Kale Fortress at sunset for best city views. Free entry. Watch the absurd new center light up from above ancient walls.
