Useful tips for visiting Shillong
Pack waterproof gear and anti-slip shoes - Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on Earth. Even in dry season, sudden showers are common
Do not drive at night between Cherrapunji and Shillong, especially during monsoon - risk of landslides and foggy conditions make roads dangerous
For the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat: prepare for 3500 steps down and back up. Start early morning, bring water and snacks. Takes 4-5 hours round trip
Carry enough cash - ATMs are rare outside Shillong and cards may not work in remote areas. UPI works in main towns but not villages
Respect local customs: ask permission before photographing locals, remove shoes when entering homes, avoid touching peoples heads. The Khasi are a matrilineal society - women are highly respected
