Santa Clara is where the Cuban Revolution ended. This is where Che Guevara's forces captured Batista's armored train and decided the war's outcome. Today, the city is the main pilgrimage site for anyone interested in Che and Cuba's revolutionary history.
Why Visit
If you're not interested in Che Guevara, there's not much reason to visit Santa Clara. It's an industrial city, not the prettiest, mainly a transit point. But if revolutionary history moves you, this is an essential stop.
Here you'll find Che's mausoleum, museum, and monument—an entire complex dedicated to the comandante.
Getting There
Santa Clara is in central Cuba, a convenient point between Havana and Trinidad or Cayo Coco.
From Havana: 270 km, 3.5-4 hours by Viazul bus.
From Varadero: 180 km, 2.5 hours.
From Trinidad: 90 km, 1.5 hours.
Che Guevara Mausoleum
The main attraction—a memorial complex on the city's western outskirts. A massive bronze statue of Che (6 meters) in combat gear, arm in a cast—he broke it in the decisive battle.
Beneath the statue lies the mausoleum where Che and his comrades rest. Their remains were found in Bolivia in 1997, 30 years after their deaths, and ceremonially reinterred here.
Nearby—a museum with Che's personal belongings: weapons, canteen, photographs, letters. Modest but moving.
Important: photography inside the mausoleum is prohibited. Dress respectfully.
Admission: free.
Hours: 8am-9pm, museum may close earlier.
Armored Train (Tren Blindado)
Downtown—a monument at the site where Che and his fighters captured Batista's armored train on December 29, 1958. Several train cars and the bulldozer used to tear up the tracks. Small but important museum.
Loma del Capiro
A hill on the city's edge with panoramic views. Flags and a metal Che monument at the top. The comandante commanded the city assault from here. Climb up at sunset.
Where to Stay
If staying overnight—casas particulares downtown. $15-25 per room. Non-touristy city means lower prices.
Many visit for a few hours in transit and continue on—enough time for the mausoleum.
How Much Time
3-4 hours: mausoleum + armored train. Sufficient for a transit visit.
1 night: if you want to see everything leisurely, including Loma del Capiro.
