Rostov is the last major Russian city before the Caucasus mountains. From here, easy access to Krasnodar, Sochi, mineral water resorts, and mountain regions.
Cossacks were warrior communities of the Don region. Their culture includes distinctive cuisine (fish, rakoviy soup), folk songs, and hospitality traditions. Still influential today.
Flight: 1.5-2h (from $40). Train: 15-20h overnight (from $35). Night train is comfortable option.
May-June and September are ideal. Summer (July-August) is very hot (35°C+). Winter is mild but can be grey.
