3-3.5 hours without stops. We recommend at least a full day, or ideally 2 days to enjoy the attractions, viewpoints, beaches, and villages. Start early to avoid afternoon crowds.
Skellig Islands (UNESCO World Heritage), Kerry Cliffs (300m sea cliffs), Killarney National Park, Gap of Dunloe, Derrynane House, pristine beaches (Derrynane, Rossbeigh, St Finian's Bay), colorful villages of Kenmare, Sneem, and Waterville.
Yes, from mid-May to October. Boat trips depart from Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, and Valentia Island. Book weeks ahead - very popular since Star Wars filming. Landing on Skellig Michael requires climbing 600 ancient steps. Weather-dependent - rough seas can cancel trips.
The Kerry region has one of only three Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserves on Earth - and the only one in the northern hemisphere. Perfect for stargazing - see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Best viewing on clear nights from September to March.
Useful tips for visiting Ring of Kerry
Drive clockwise (opposite to tour buses) if self-driving to avoid getting stuck behind coaches on narrow roads. Buses go anti-clockwise by regulation.
Book Skellig boat trips weeks in advance - extremely popular since Star Wars filming. Trips are weather-dependent and can be cancelled last minute due to rough seas.
Stop at Kerry Cliffs - a less crowded alternative to the Cliffs of Moher with spectacular views of Skellig Islands and Puffin Island. Small entry fee (around €4).
Bring a camera with spare battery - you will take hundreds of photos! Many viewpoints have no facilities, so bring snacks and water. Fill up on petrol before starting.
Try fresh seafood chowder in coastal villages like Portmagee, Waterville, or Caherdaniel. Locally caught fish and shellfish are specialties.
Detour to the Skellig Ring - a less-traveled side loop with dramatic coastal views and the best viewpoints for Skellig Islands. Narrow roads but worth it.
