Ravenna has 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites with Byzantine mosaics from 5th-6th century. Basilica di San Vitale, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia are most stunning. Finest preserved Byzantine art outside Istanbul.
Dante was exiled from Florence and spent last years in Ravenna, dying here in 1321. Florence repeatedly asked for remains but Ravenna refuses. His tomb is in centro storico.
Train from Bologna (1h), Rimini (1h), Florence (2h). Small local airport exists but Bologna (BLQ) main choice. Easy day trip from Bologna.
Absolutely! Underrated gem with unique Byzantine mosaics nowhere else in Europe. Add beach access in summer. 1-2 days ideal. Much quieter than Florence/Venice.
