Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Pyongyang

ONLY accessible via organized tours. Book through specialized agencies: Koryo Tours (Beijing), Young Pioneer Tours, Lupine Travel. Individual travel impossible. Tours from €1000-2500 for 4-8 days.

Entry via Beijing (Air Koryo) or train from Dandong, China. Russian tourists can also fly from Vladivostok. No entry from South Korea. Get visa through tour operator - takes 4-6 weeks.

NO INTERNET for tourists. No SIM cards. No WiFi. Complete digital isolation. Bring books, music offline. Your phone cameras work but no connectivity. It's part of the experience.

Bring EUR or USD cash - no cards work. Tourists don't use local won. Everything paid by tour or in foreign currency shops. No ATMs. Budget €50-100/day for extras, souvenirs, beer.

Photo rules: Ask before EVERY photo. No military, construction, poverty, unflattering angles of statues. Delete if asked. Full-body shots of leaders only, never cut off. Guides check your phone.

Kumsusan mausoleum: STRICT dark formal wear (no jeans, shorts, sandals). Men: suit/tie. Women: conservative dress. Bow 4 times (once on each side). Most solemn experience.

Best time: April-May (spring, Mass Games possible) or September (Arirang season). Summer humid, winter very cold. Avoid Feb-March (low season, limited tours).

Try Pyongyang cold noodles (naengmyeon), Taedonggang beer (surprisingly good!), ginseng dishes. Food included in tour but quality varies. Bring snacks just in case.
